How to choose the right adhesive

A practical reference on adhesive classification and selection — the same logic behind our Solution Finder, laid out in full for anyone who wants the underlying reasoning.

Understanding the classification system

Tile and stone adhesives are classified under EN 12004, the standard most Indian brands (including MYK Laticrete) reference on their packaging.

C1 — Standard adhesive. Cementitious, normal bond strength. Fine for small-to-medium ceramic tiles, indoors, on a sound substrate.

C2 — Improved adhesive. Higher bond strength. Needed for vitrified tiles, natural stone, glass/mosaic, or larger tiles — anything with lower porosity or more weight per tile.

S1 — Deformable. Flexes with substrate movement. Needed for large-format tiles, underfloor heating, or retiling over old tile/plywood.

S2 — Highly deformable. For more extreme movement — balconies, exterior cladding, substrates prone to expansion/contraction.

Quick decision table

Small ceramic tile, indoor, new concrete — C1 standard adhesive

Vitrified or natural stone tile, any size — C2 high-bond adhesive

Large-format tile (2 ft and above), any material — C2 S1 flexible high-bond adhesive

Retiling over old tile, or fixing to plywood — S1 deformable adhesive

Bathroom, balcony, or other wet area — water-resistant adhesive system, over a waterproofing membrane

Outdoor / exterior — S1 or S2 flexible adhesive to handle temperature movement

Application basics that affect the outcome

When in doubt

Use our Solution Finder — describe the job (tile size, material, area, substrate) and it applies this same logic automatically, then shows dealers stocking the right product near you.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for the specific manufacturer's technical data sheet for the product you're using — always check the product packaging or datasheet for exact application instructions.
